I’ve been in love with Wing Chun for a long time and I’ve just trained for about three months. Currently I’m not up to Chi Sau yet but my master says that Wing Chun fights with touching senses, or with a “third eye”. I do believe that Chi Sau is for training and improving that “third eye”, by letting you get on a feeling with opponent’s hands and their hands’ positions, then guess their next moves. This is why some masters don’t even need their eyes open to block or counter. In my opinion, this is a wonderful technique and I totally disagree with your point about Chi Sau.

Also note that in Wing Chun, every single detail, even from the very first thing you’re taught from the very first beginning, significantly contributes to the outcome. I can ensure that every single move you learn from Wing Chun has its own deep meaning, and being able to interpret every meaning of the moves is considered as the true learning of Wing Chun. Wing Chun isn’t an aggressive martial art which people usually mistake with “realistic” martial art. It is a martial art that only does the least of what’s need to be done. With the best efficiency in movement and using energy, I do believe Wing Chun is one of the most realistic martial art out there. To me, every martial arts has their own beauty which you cannot (or should not) compare with one another. Just give it a try and you will know what I really mean there but I must say if you don’t have enough patience for Wing Chun, you’ll just become one of those silly haters.

I don’t remember the exact words (they can be found in the book Poet on the Peaks) – but, basically Alan called him a hack. Said his beatnik Zen wasn’t the real Zen. I think this really affected Kerouac deeply. I think it was shortly after that Ginsberg came out with something and it got nothing but praise from Alan. This, again, affected Jack. Great book for a behind-the-scenes look at the ones who were the pivotal characters of the beat generation.
