Gung Fu Skill Blossoms

My door is currently closed to students.

I haven’t let on to the students how difficult a decision it was to allow them a considerable hiatus before I resume teaching. But like most things I do, there is a method to the madness and the Devil resides in my mind, swathed within the fabric of detail.

I am hoping that this counter-logical ‘opportunity’ is viewed as a valuable time for growth. It will allow my handful of students to think about the things I have taught thus far, hopefully encouraging them to think with clarity, free of my interference. And perhaps it will also allow the blossoming of skill to continue through a mixture of self-motivated training and reflection. After all, what more can I ask for, other than aself-reliant body of students to follow out their own methods of research”.

See my method is not about entrapping people in my viewpoint of what fighting is. It is about pushing them to their psychological limits to see whether they have the capacity to endure. Because, the ability to endure extreme hardship is  critical to the development of effective street based self-protection. And if I am able to impart a self regulating system where the student takes full responsibilty for their own training, my lessons set a foundation for self-exploration long after I am gone. The aim is to set a person free to allow them to express themselves, within the medium of punching and kicking.

Time will tell whether they progress or regress. But one thing is guaranteed, that I will continue to train daily. Because to teach the lesson, I have to set the standard through the development of the Self.

“Passion has little to do with euphoria and everything to do with patience. It is not about feeling good. It is about endurance. Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root: pati. It does not mean to flow with exuberance. It means to suffer.” Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves
